I think people underestimate how much communication is involved in being a Business Analyst. The key to being a good BA is communicating well with your stakeholders and your team.

We know there’s one thing that really sets us apart: our people. In this series, we take you behind the scenes with people from all over DB Results and show you what really makes us tick.

Hi, I’m Zac, a Consultant at DB Results. I’ve been here for two years, working primarily in business analysis, with experience in project management across different sectors.

If I had to describe what I do, I’d say I support wherever I can and help solve problems. I don’t like to put too many limits around what I can do. I enjoy jumping into something new, figuring it out and helping wherever I’m needed.

I’m a pretty calm and grounded person, so people often come to me when they’re working through a decision. Sometimes it’s about helping someone find the right direction, and sometimes it’s simply giving them confidence that they’re already heading the right way.

What I enjoy most about DB Results is the collaboration. It’s a place where you can openly talk through a problem, ask for another perspective and work together to find the right solution. I think people underestimate how much communication is involved in being a Business Analyst. The key to being a good BA is communicating well with your stakeholders and your team.

One of my favourite projects so far was working with a water utilities company. It was stressful at times, but the team was close and worked really effectively together. Consulting has also taken me into areas I never expected, including waste management, which gave me a new appreciation for how important the sector is to the community.

What I’m most proud of at DB Results, though, is the connections and friendships I’ve built. There are a lot of good people here, and I’ve made close friends who I think I’ll stay connected with throughout my career.

Most recently, I’ve been working with the marketing team, creating content, working with industry leads to help get our brand out there, and helping organise our annual customer celebration. It’s given me a better understanding of how the business works behind the scenes.

Outside work, I’m a pretty active person. Running is my biggest focus at the moment, but I also enjoy mountain biking, surfing and hiking. Some of my proudest accomplishments have been completing a 100-kilometre trail race in under 12 hours and running 150 kilometres in 24 hours.

Sport has taught me a lot about persistence. Things don’t always go your way, but you keep showing up and trying again. Eventually, things turn around and everything comes together.

If I had three tips for someone wanting to get into consulting, they’d be: be open-minded, be ready to take on any challenge and enjoy working in teams.
