One thing people often misunderstand about consulting is its versatility. While some may see it as specialised, I’ve found it to be incredibly flexible and adaptable, offering a diverse range of opportunities and roles.

We know there’s one thing that really sets us apart: our people. In this series, we take you behind the scenes with people from all over DB Results and show you what really makes us tick.

Hello, I’m Felipe Neri, and I am a Lead Consultant at DB Results in Melbourne.

Right now, I’m the Test Lead for a migration project that I’ve been involved with for over two years. At this phase in the project, my day involves triaging and managing solutions for defects, attending meetings with various stakeholders, allocating tasks to my team and fielding questions from both the DB Results project team and our customer. With my background in similar projects, I often share my insights on feature functionalities and Agile methodologies. I’m happy to say, people seem to feel comfortable coming to me for advice, and I always try to make time to listen to their concerns and provide support or guidance.

My journey to consulting hasn’t been the most straightforward – I began my career in Mexico as a Project Management Officer on Information Technology projects, before coming to Australia to study a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Following my masters, I worked in logistics for a couple of years, and I was eventually drawn back into project life and consulting at DB Results.

One of the highlights of my DB Results journey so far has been the opportunity for growth. Starting out as a manual tester, I’ve been able to gradually expand my skill set, and this has led to me becoming a People Leader and Lead Consultant, with a team of testers under my guidance.

One reason I love consulting is its versatility. While some may see it as specialised, I’ve found it to be incredibly flexible and adaptable, offering a diverse range of opportunities and roles.

As for my favourite project, it’s the one I’m currently working on. The sense of shared purpose makes every milestone a celebration, and every challenge a shared burden, forging bonds that transcend the confines of the workplace. It’s a unique experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything else.

Outside of work, all my time and energy go to my gorgeous 2-year-old daughter. I’m determined to immerse her in Mexican language and culture. I speak to her in Spanish, take her to Spanish playgroups and video call my family back home in Mexico as much as possible. Last year was very exciting, as my wife and I took our daughter on her first trip to Mexico. Not only was it a great opportunity for her to meet all her relatives, but my (now) wife and I got married there!

Although being a parent takes up all my time these days, I do have other interests! Tennis has always been a strong passion of mine – so much so, in fact, that the Australian Open was the reason I chose to move to Melbourne to undertake my master’s degree! Since arriving here, I’ve attended the Aus Open every year, and it’s now a family tradition. One of the happiest moments of my life was winning tickets to the Men’s Final in 2022 and getting to see one of the most epic matches ever!

My greatest life achievement is undoubtedly my move to Australia. I came here to study an MBA, in my second language, and I was originally not planning to stay for more than 4 years. It was a daunting experience, and it has been a struggle being so far away from my family and friends, especially since Mexican culture is very focused on family closeness. But I’m living a dream now. Seven years in, I’ve made a life here with my wife and child, and I am developing a career of which I’m very proud.
