In today’s fast-paced tech world, few roles are as dynamic and varied as that of a Senior Technical Consultant. Take a peek into the world of Michael de Guzman, a seasoned consultant who’s been at the forefront of transforming legacy systems into cutting-edge platforms using OutSystems, a low-code application development platform.
My name is Michael De Guzman, I’m a Senior Technical Consultant at DB Results. At the moment, I’m working on a project for our Travel Industry customer. It used to be a legacy system that we’ve now converted to OutSystems. I’ve helped maintain the original application, and I’ve built new applications from scratch, stepping into different roles along the way. My expertise lies in OutSystems, and it’s something I’ve really embraced since 2021, when I became an OutSystems Champion. After 25 years as a software engineer, I’m convinced that low-code platforms like OutSystems are the future of development.

No two days are the same. Some days, I’m swamped with tickets for bug fixes, while others, I’m designing solutions—like creating user provisioning for the current customer I am working with, which I’ll be presenting at the upcoming OutSystems conference in Amsterdam. User provisioning is all about automating the process of assigning roles and registrations through a platform. It reduces human error and streamlines processes, especially with SCIM protocol integration.
My career highlight at DB Results
One of the most exciting parts of my career has been moving to Australia and working with DB Results. The projects here are more challenging and rewarding, offering me the chance to grow my technical skills. I’ve particularly enjoyed learning how to work with my Australian colleagues. There’s a different style of communication here compared to the Philippines, and adapting to these cultural differences has been both a challenge and a highlight. I’m really grateful for the opportunity DB Results has given me to work in such an environment.
People come to me for help with a variety of things, mostly related to OutSystems. If developers ask, they’re usually looking for advice on best practices or how to build better relationships with their customers. If it’s business analysts or project managers, they tend to seek my input on technical risks or compliance issues. I’m here to offer insights that ensure smooth project delivery, while maintaining a high standard of security and functionality.
The best part of my job is seeing a client happy with the applications we build, especially when we know it’s making a big difference for them. On the flip side, the worst part is dealing with unexpected technical issues that are tough to resolve. But that’s the nature of the job—people and solutions always come first.
Misconceptions about Low-Code development
There are a lot of misconceptions about low-code development, especially that it’s not suitable for enterprise-level projects or isn’t scalable. People think low-code is just a glorified flowchart or that it won’t handle the demands of growing businesses. But that’s simply not true. Platforms like OutSystems are built on scalable infrastructures like AWS, meaning they can easily handle increases in users and demand. Educating people about the power of low-code is one of my favourite parts of the job.
In the end, my work as a Senior Technical Consultant is all about solving problems, creating solutions, and making life easier for businesses and their customers. Every day brings something new, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
A little bit about me outside work
Away from work, I’m a family man. My daughter, who’s turning three soon, keeps me busy. I love cooking for my family, and I’ve been learning to make more Australian dishes since she’s taken a liking to them. On weekends, you’ll find us near Westfield playing arcade games, especially the claw machines. I am also in the works of growing our own vegetables, which is something I enjoy to unwind. And, of course, there’s the occasional video game or TV session with my wife—though she usually has control of the remote.
My ideal Sunday involves having breakfast with my family, followed by a trip to the playground or the beach. My daughter is the key decision-maker in our house, so sometimes, we end up at the zoo or SeaWorld instead. Whatever the plan, it’s all about spending quality time with them.
