Co-CEO at DB Results Gavin Bunshaw spoke to Connector about the tech company’s digital solution, Melbourne Alive™. The mobile app is now available on the App Store and Google Play and is being offered free to businesses and individuals, helping to keep Melbourne open and safe.
The main reason we developed Melbourne Alive™ is to give power back to the individuals so they can not only provide information in a secure safe way, but also track where they’ve been and who they’ve seen. The key thing about Melbourne Alive™ is that it’s a solution that’s actually needed now. Right now, businesses that show they can accurately report on who has been there, and when they’ve been there, are more protected even if there is an outbreak. Currently there is no solution available that people can use commonly that can provide this level of tracing.
In the same way that wearing a mask is responsible when going out, I see this as just another responsible way of being COVID-safe. We’ve lived through what they say was one of the toughest shutdowns in the world. Victorians have worked amazingly hard. We’ve achieved what a lot of places haven’t achieved by being so successful at actually getting numbers down; now the aim is to never go back to those days of shutdown. To stay safe, still be able to interact and enjoy all those things that come with the ability to socialise and do it in a safe way. Melbourne Alive™ supports that, and it’s adaptable. It has the ‘Melbourne’ Alive tag, but its use is actually not limited to Melbourne.
What we did was build an application really quickly that would let people could track who they’re seeing with very minimal information exchanging hands: just a name and contact number. That means if there is an outbreak or if there is something to be aware of, you can let people know, I was in touch with you at this time, or let the government know, these are the people I saw. You’re not relying on your memory, you’re not searching for receipts, and everyone can use it.
Importantly, we’re offering it free. We’re a commercial business but we thought, actually, this is a good thing for Melbourne, and it’s more important that Melbourne does this to get back to business than for us actually make money from it, so that’s the reason we made it available to everyone. We encourage everyone to download Melbourne Alive™. The more people who use it the better it’s going to be for all of us, and it will keep us safe and keep Melbourne open.
We wouldn’t have been able to build Melbourne Alive™ if we hadn’t had successes with health platforms we have already delivered. We built Wellness+, which is a wellness platform, and PROSTMATE for the Australian Prostate Centre, which is a vital link for cancer patients. So, we already had a platform that was robust and tested. We enhanced it with additional functionality.
If you’re a business you’ve got two ways of using Melbourne Alive™. You can put a QR code up on your windows and ask people to self-register when they come in. So, they have the app on their phone, they scan your QR code and it automatically sends their contact details to you, but it also registers on their phone that they visited you. It’s all consensual, nothing is shared without the individual agreeing to share it and the individual knows exactly who they share their information with. With Melbourne Alive™ each individual gets a unique QR code. It’s like a digital footprint of yourself, where it keeps your name and your number, alongside that footprint. It’s a very simple way of exchanging information accurately.
It is not just for businesses. You can use it at home as your way of tracking who you visit or who visits you, and then when you happen to go to organisations or restaurants or buildings where they’ve also got Melbourne Alive™, then it’s a simple scan and go.
We believe in the long term good, so if businesses get back to business, if people get back to getting out, if our staff are safe and protected, if our families are safe and protected, it’s actually good for us as a company. We’re in the heart of Melbourne, on the corner of Elizabeth and Collins streets, it’s our contribution to help get people back on their feet. I mean, that’s why we called it Melbourne Alive™: let’s get Melbourne back up and going. Download Melbourne Alive™ today.
